Introduction

Man has been actively exploring the polar regions for hundreds of years.  It was only as recent as the 1930's that man established Arctic ice stations on ice floes.  Ice stations, also referred to as "Drift Stations", were also established on ice islands (T-3 & ARLIS II).  The Soviets were the first to do this in 1937 with a station which was given the designation of NP-1 (North Pole 1).  Subsequent Soviet ice stations were designated NP-2, NP-3, etc.  Soviet ice stations are sometimes referred to as "SP" for the Russian "Severnyy Polyus" (North Pole). The United States initially use a numbering system, T-1, T-2, & T-3 ("T" stood for Target) but did not continue with this convention. Later ice stations were given names.

Names "Underlined" and in "BoldFace" have a Active  Link to a page/s dedicated to that Ice Island/Ice`Stationship.   More information will be added as material is submitted.
