Russian Ice Station NP-33

9 September 2004 - 6 September 2005

Cancelled on opening day 09 September 2004

North Pole 33 was established on 9 September 2004.  The cover above is postmarked with that date.  The station was launched from the research vessel "Akademik Fedorov" (ice class), ice-breaker "Arctica" and a MI-8 helicopter.  This was the 21st cruise of the R/V Akademik Fedorov.  The Ice Station was located at latitude 85.05 north, longitude 156.31 at 12:00 GMT.  The team consisted of 11 personnel.  In the Spring of 2005 this number will increase.  The new Russian drifting station is named after Yu. B. Konstantinov.

Cancelled upon closing 05 September 2005

North Pole 33 was closed on 6 September 2005 ( Moscow time).  The ice flow was reported to have broken into more than ten pieces.  All equipment and personnel were evacuated in an orderly fashion to the Russian research vessel Akademik Fyodorov.  The vessel worked in conjunction with the Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker Arktika.    The last personnel left the flow on 6 September.  A new ice station, reported to be named NP-33/2 (referred as NP-34 in Russian news reports) was established on 19 September 2005.

News:  The present radio operator of SP-33 (Vladimir Levchenko) does not operate an amateur radio station, but I heard from reliable sources that Victor may relief him around September or October this year, so I expect that station SP-33 again will be on the air for amateur radio stations!

Best regards and good luck with the Polar History website!
