Russian Ice Station NP-33/2

(NP-34)

19 September 2005 -

Cancelled on opening day 19 September 2005

The Akademik Fyodorov and Arktika sailed from NP-33 to an area north of the Novosibirsk Islands to search for a suitable ice flow on which to establish NP-34.  Helicopter flights from the Akademik Fyodorov were used in this effort.  A suitable flow was located at 75 degrees north latitude and 120 degrees east longitude.  The flow is approximately five kilometers long by five kilometers wide.  The thickness is reported at two meters.

NP-33/2 was established on 19 Sep 05.  Twelve scientist, lead by Tomas Valerianovich Petrovskiy, make up the initial complement.  The flow will be occupied for one year.

An early report from Russia referred to the new station as NP-33/2.  All official reports in the Russian press that I have managed to locate refer to the new station as NP-34.  A sample cover from the opening of the station, dated 19 Sep 05, used the CN-33 cancel devise.

Another cover cancelled on opening day 19 September 2005
